Integração com a graduação
Currently, the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at UFES has about 450 undergraduate students who benefit directly from the experience of interacting with faculty and graduate students, as well as from participation in research activities. Undergraduate students are effectively offered mandatory and elective courses related to the program’s research lines. They have access to all the teaching materials and research laboratories of the program. Additionally, a significant number of undergraduate students are involved in research activities, with most being encouraged by scientific initiation scholarships. On average, each professor in the PPGEM mentors two scientific initiation scholars annually. In fact, nearly all projects developed by PPGEM faculty involve undergraduate students. Currently, more than 15 undergraduate students are working on PPGEM projects, most of them as scholarship holders. Many of these students continue their studies in graduate programs, contributing to a reduction in the average time to degree completion, which was less than 25 months in 2013. In the following years, 2014 and 2015, the average time to completion was around 28 months. Therefore, the PPGEM coordination aims to further encourage the involvement of undergraduate students in research projects.
The main sources of funding for scientific initiation students are:
Monitor Scholarship – assistance for teaching and laboratories, selecting students interested in specializing in sciences.
Double Diplôme Program Arts et Métiers ParisTech-UFES (Franco-Brazilian BRAFITEC).
Almost all projects developed by PPGEM faculty include scientific initiation students.
As a result, undergraduate students receive a solid and comprehensive education, ensuring the success and prestige of UFES graduates in the job market. On the other hand, as mentioned, a significant portion of these graduates feeds into the student flow of the PPGEM.
Regarding the faculty of DEM/UFES, those wishing to work in the PPGEM must meet the same standards established by the PPGEM internal regulations and CAPES evaluation criteria. Thus, the request for these faculty members to participate in graduate programs is only made after demonstrating that their metrics are satisfied, as well as obtaining approval from the Program Collegiate. To encourage ongoing integration between undergraduate and graduate studies, all PPGEM faculty, without exception, have teaching and mentoring activities in the undergraduate program.
The number of undergraduate co-authors on PPGEM projects has also grown significantly. In 2013, more than 10 students participated in conference papers. In the following years, 2014 and 2015, the average participation of students remained consistent.
Teacher Internship:
Currently, the teaching internship is a mandatory course in the PPGEM for doctoral students receiving CAPES scholarships. The process follows a specific resolution.
